temporary injunction

Costa Mesa’s layoff of 213 workers was blocked by a temporary injunction issued by Orange County Superior Judge Tam Munoto Schumann, stopping the layoffs until a full trial is held.

The city and the union dispute whether or not the judge ruled that Costa Mesa wasn’t following proper procedures.

Helen Nenadal, president of the Costa Mesa Employees Association, said “for employees this is an outstanding day. It keeps us going in the right direction.”

Tom Hatch, Costa Mesa CEO, said “We still haven’t received a copy of the ruling in writing yet. We have put out a press release on the city web site.”

In the press release, City Attorney Tom Duarte said, “We are following the proper procedures. This ruling doesn’t affect the City’s ability to research outsourcing possibilities and, if it’s prudent, to outsource City jobs down the road.”

The judge’s written ruling will be available this week.
