Newport Beach parks and beaches ordnance

NEWPORT BEACH, California, July 12—The Newport Beach City Council has delayed action on its new beach and parks ordinance.

Mayor Mike Henn requested a buffer area on public streets in addition to banning smoking on beaches, boardwalks, and parks.

Council Member Keith Curry objected to “an over reach with unintended consequences” on fees for instruction and other park use limitations.

He was particularly concerned about possible restrictions on religious groups.

Other council members expressed concern about bicycle parking limits and exclusions for personal trainers.

Members of the public praised the smoking bans.

The city staff will draft a new version of the ordinance for future consideration.
