OCC scholarship donation
COSTA MESA, CaliforniaOrange Coast College received a $206,000 donation for scholarships, the largest gift of its kind in the colleges 63 year history.
The anonymous donor directed that the money be invested to create a permanent flow of scholarships.
Each year the Basil Peterson Scholarship will have an additional six scholarships of $1,000 each and the Cy Rockey Scholarship will have an additional four scholarships of $1,000 each for OCC architectual technology majors.
The donor, a long-timesupporter of the college, wishes to remain anonymous, according to OCC Foundation Director Doug Bennett. We are just really excited, Bennett said. The donor specifically requested that the gift fund the Basil Peterson Scholarship, in honor of OCCs founding president, and the Cy Rockey Scholarship. Rockey was a founding faculty member at the college who joined the staff in 1947. Rockey contributed $14,000 one year before the college officially opened its doors.
Dr. Basil Peterson was the first president of the college. He laid the groundwork for the development of Orange Coast College on the site of the abandoned Santa Ana Army Air Base following World War II. The college welcomed 533 students in September 1948. Peterson served as president of Orange Coast College for its first 17 years.
Cy Rockey was a founding faculty member who taught drafting and machine shop and was instrumental in building OCCs Technology Division. Rockey retired in 1966.
Last year the OCC Foundation reported a total of $1 million in cash contributions and donations. The Foundation has assets totaling $14 million, which include cash gifts that are invested to produce scholarship funds as well as boats donated to the OCC School of Sailing and Seamanship.
